“Youth is the first victim of war; the first fruit of peace. It takes 20 years or more of peace to make a man; it takes only 20 seconds of war to destroy him.”

- King Baudouin, King of Belgium

Pugwash, Parliamentarians and Political Will: Advancing the Agenda for Abolition

Twenty-five of the most prominent legislators from around the world will join with disarmament experts at the Thinkers' Lodge in Pugwash in an unprecedented meeting to develop strategies for building the political will necessary to take bold steps for nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament leading to the abolition of nuclear weapons and the achievement of a nuclear weapons-free world.

The conference will culminate on July 12 in our third annual Dinner of Peace, held in Pugwash, Nova Scotia.  At this event, the conference delegates, Pugwash Peace Exchange members and guests will be presented with an enlightening and informative talk by keynote speaker Sergio de Queiroz Duarte, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament.  This dinner will be preceded by a reception at which our supporters will be able to meet Under-Seceretary-General Duarte, as well as the other prominent figures from the conference, such as Dr. Jayantha Dhanapala, President of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, Marion Hobbs MP of New Zealand, and Senator Douglas Roche of the Middle Powers Initiative.
