Present Need for Peace


In March 1954, the US had its first successful test of a hydrogen bomb – the Bravo Test – in the Bikini Atoll, with a yield of 15 megatons (approximately 1,000 times more powerful than the bomb used in Hiroshima).

Decades have passed since the first Pugwash Conference, and the quest for peace continues. From Vietnam, to Kuwait, to Afghanistan, to Iraq, to countless civil conflicts taking place all over the globe, the need for peace is still one of the greatest urgency. In 2005, 11,000 terrorist attacks occurred, resulting in 14,500 deaths (Source: U.S. National Counterterrorism Center.)

 

Many conflicts have been ongoing for generations. What follows is a list of conflicts and wars that are ongoing today:
